Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or I-CBT is a specialized form of OCD treatment focusing on the thinking and reasoning that occurs in OCD. This type of therapy helps people understand their OCD thoughts in a new way which then helps them reduce uncomfortable feelings and compulsive behavior.
I-CBT is centered in the Inference Based Approach (IBA) which identifies the intrusive thinking of OCD as doubts caused by faulty reasoning that confuses reality and imagination. I-CBT helps reduce OCD by helping people recognize the confusing OCD reasoning and compare it to their authentic reasoning and the real story of their lives.
Clients are guided through a series of reading and practice assignments to be completed during and outside of therapy visits. Exposure therapy is not required in I-CBT.
More than 40 published empirical studies have been completed showing evidence that I-CBT is an effective treatment for OCD. Many of our clients find I-CBT to be a helpful alternative to traditional ERP treatment for OCD.
