Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT is a mindfulness-based, problem-focused behavioral treatment that helps people shift their relationship with their thoughts and feelings to reduce distress and adjust unhelpful patterns of behavior.
ACT is grounded in the belief that distress and problems are a natural part of life and what matters is how we cope with our struggles.
We use ACT to help with the following:
If your struggle with any of the issues listed above, we encourage you to try acceptance and commitment therapy.
With ACT, you’ll be able to better cope with distress and life struggles by relating differently to the thoughts that directly influence your emotions and behavior. In ACT this process is referred to as cognitive defusion.
ACT techniques include:
- Identifying and exploring your personal values
- Cognitive defusion
- Identifying and committing to meaningful and values-informed behavior changes
- Mindfulness skills
- Acceptance skills
Like other forms of cognitive behavioral therapy ACT is much more than talking about whatever comes to mind or focusing on problems. ACT sessions are structured to ensure that the therapist and the client are focused on the learning and behaivor change required to accomplish the client’s goals.
